Picture an ancient Phoenician sea wall, a cobbled souk, and a glass of fresh lemonade in your hand before lunch. That is a weekend in Batroun, a small coastal town about 50 km north of Beirut. Stay near the old town and almost everything is a short walk away.
Where to stay
Most of our Batroun stays are guesthouses and villas with a pool, in and around the town. Pick by the kind of weekend you want.
Pool guesthouse in Dahr El Qotlob, Batroun
For a pool weekend, look at the villages around the town, such as Dahr El Qotlob and Chabtine. The Pool Guesthouse in Dahr El Qotlob is one example.
The old sea wall by the harbor is Batroun's signature. It is about 225 metres long, and the Phoenicians reinforced it to protect the harbor from storms. A small Roman theater sits just to the north, and the Our Lady of the Sea chapel looks over the wall.
The old souk is cobbled, with vaulted sandstone arches. Saint Stephen's Cathedral, named for the town's patron saint, stands in the old town. The 13th-century Saint George Greek Orthodox church has a dome.
A short drive away, the Mseilha fort stands on an isolated rock. Emir Fakhreddine II built it in the 17th century to guard the road between Tripoli and Beirut.
What to eat and drink
Batroun is known for its fresh lemonade, sold on the main street since the early twentieth century. Patisserie RIM is named as the oldest lemonade spot. Chez Hilmi, Limonade Tony Daou and Chez Maguy are others.
For seafood, try Le Marin's. Batrouniyat sells homemade preserves and regional dishes. The Colonel Brewery and Distillery makes craft beer in town.

Inland, the "Route des Vins du Nord" links IXSIR, Adyar, Chateau Sanctus and Clos du Phoenix.
What to do outside
The beaches are mostly pebble. White Beach is known for windsurfing, and Bonita Bay and Pearl Beach are popular too. You can take windsurfing lessons at White Beach, Batroun Water Sports and Colonel Reef.
The Nahr el Jawz (Walnut River) trail runs about 11 km up from the city, lined with walnut trees, and is fairly easy.

When to go
The Batroun International Festival has run since 2009. It usually takes place in July and August in the old harbor area. For beach days with fewer crowds, local guides call autumn weather perfect on the coast.
How to get there
Batroun is about 50 km from Beirut, roughly an hour by road. A car makes the wineries and villages much easier. Leave early on Friday afternoons, as traffic out of Beirut can be slow.
